Every minute, a job on our mail server opens a real connection to each service named above and records what happened. These are live probes, not a manually-updated graphic — and they run from a different machine than this page, so a problem with the website cannot make the mail servers look broken. A component is only marked down after two consecutive failed checks, and if the checks themselves stop reporting we say so rather than showing you a stale green tick. We also deliberately do not derive status from mail volume: inbound traffic legitimately drops to zero overnight, and a page that cried outage every night would be worth ignoring.
