Rackspace Email Alternative After the Price Rise
Rackspace Email went from $2.99 to $10 per mailbox per month. Here is how flat-rate hosting compares at 5, 15 and 30 mailboxes, and what you give up by moving.
Rackspace Email went from $2.99 to $10 per mailbox per month. Here is how flat-rate hosting compares at 5, 15 and 30 mailboxes, and what you give up by moving.
Rackspace has hosted business email for more than two decades. In 2025 its Standard mailbox listed at $2.99 per mailbox per month. By January 2026 its pricing page listed the same mailbox at $10, with the same 25 GB mailboxes, and both add-ons doubled in price. If you're searching for a Rackspace email alternative, here's how to compare the numbers and trade-offs fairly.
Let's run real numbers. Rackspace Email at its $10/mailbox/month list price (checked October 2026):
| Mailboxes | Monthly Cost | Yearly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | $50 | $600 |
| 15 | $150 | $1,800 |
| 30 | $300 | $3,600 |
JustEmails flat pricing:
| Mailboxes | Monthly Cost | Yearly Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | ~$4.08 | $49 |
| 15 | ~$4.08 | $49 |
| 30 | ~$4.08 | $49 |
That's not a typo. JustEmails charges $49/year flat — unlimited mailboxes, unlimited domains, 10 GB storage included. The 30-mailbox scenario? Rackspace costs 73x more.
In our view, per-mailbox pricing is hard to justify. A provider's costs track storage and sending far more than the number of addresses, and the per-seat model persists mostly because Google and Microsoft trained buyers to accept it.
| Feature | JustEmails | Rackspace Email |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | $49/year flat | $10/mailbox/month |
| Mailbox limit | Unlimited | Per-seat billing |
| Domain limit | Unlimited | Per-seat billing |
| Storage | 10 GB total (+100 GB blocks at $99/year) | 25 GB per mailbox |

Rackspace's 25 GB per-mailbox storage looks generous on paper. But if you have 15 mailboxes and only 3 of them use meaningful storage, you're paying for 375 GB of capacity, most of which sits unused. JustEmails gives you a 10 GB pool you can expand as needed — pay for what you actually use.
Let's be honest about what you lose by switching.
Rackspace built its reputation on phone support, and it still advertises human support around the clock. That matters if your business depends on immediate voice escalation.
JustEmails doesn't offer phone support. If you're the kind of organization where "call support immediately" is part of your incident playbook, that's a real gap.
25 GB per mailbox means your power users — the ones who never delete anything and keep 10 years of email history — won't hit limits. JustEmails starts at 10 GB total and scales in 100 GB blocks at $99/year each.
For most SMBs, 10-20 GB total is plenty. But if you have employees with 8 GB inboxes each, do the math before switching.
Rackspace has existed since 1998. IT departments know the name. Procurement processes have Rackspace pre-approved. JustEmails is a much newer service from Velocity Digital Labs, the studio behind ClickzProtect for bot detection and VeloCalls for AI calling. "New" makes procurement nervous, and if your CTO needs a vendor with a decade of uptime history, we can't offer that yet.
This one matters more as the team grows. Unlimited mailboxes does not mean unlimited sending. Every mailbox on an account draws on one shared daily send cap, and API sends count against the same allowance.
The ceiling ramps from the date you verify a domain: no more than 50 a day in the first week, 200 in the second, and up to 500 from day 15.
Spread that across 30 people and it is a few messages each. A team of 5 to 30 that sends heavy customer mail, quotes or outbound campaigns should check those numbers against its real volume before moving. JustEmails is not built for newsletters or mailing lists, and the daily and hourly ceilings are the reason. Adding another domain restarts that domain's ramp too, so a long-standing account isn't instantly at 500 on it.
The 7-day trial is card-gated and limited to 1 domain, 2 mailboxes, 1 GB of storage and 20 sends a day, with no API access and no team access. You can test one real mailbox and the DNS records. You can't rehearse a 15-mailbox cutover or a multi-domain setup before paying, so plan the first week after purchase as the real test (the 14-day refund window runs from the first charge only, not renewals).
At 5 mailboxes, Rackspace costs $600/year. JustEmails costs $49/year. That's $551 saved annually — for the same core function.
At 15 mailboxes, Rackspace costs $1,800/year. JustEmails is still $49/year. You're saving $1,751.
At 30 mailboxes? Rackspace hits $3,600/year. JustEmails: $49/year.
This isn't a small difference. It's a difference in pricing philosophy. Per-mailbox hosting assumes more employees should mean a bigger bill. Flat-rate hosting treats email as infrastructure and prices it that way.
JustEmails auto-configures SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and MTA-STS records for each domain. Add your domain, add the records the dashboard shows you at your DNS host, and it checks each one and tells you which are still missing.
For a 5-person agency managing 20 client domains, one dashboard that checks every record on every domain saves real time. If you're rolling out DMARC across multiple domains, our guide to moving from p=none to p=reject safely walks through the gotchas.
JustEmails includes 1,000 transactional emails per month on the base plan. Need more? Add tiers at $25/year per 10,000 emails/month. A tier raises the monthly quota, not the daily sending cap.
Rackspace's pricing page lists no transactional API. If your app sends password resets, order confirmations, or notifications, you'd be buying a separate service — Resend, Postmark, SendGrid. Each with its own billing, DNS records, and management overhead.
JustEmails bundles mailbox hosting and transactional sending so you manage one product instead of two. More on that in our SMTP vs API transactional email breakdown.
Rackspace's control panel works, though in our view it shows its age.
JustEmails has a single-purpose dashboard: add domains, create mailboxes, check DNS health, manage team permissions. No nested menus. No hunting for settings. (Most vendor dashboards get this wrong — tab sprawl piled on top of tab sprawl, three settings screens deep for something that should be one toggle.) When a client asks "why isn't my email working," you can share a screenshot that actually makes sense.
Small thing? Not when you're managing 15 domains and explaining DNS to non-technical clients.
The switch is less painful than you'd think.
1. Sign up for JustEmails and add your domain(s). Don't change DNS yet.
2. Create matching mailboxes. Same addresses, new passwords.
3. Migrate email history via IMAP. Use Thunderbird, Outlook, or any IMAP client. Download from Rackspace, upload to JustEmails. JustEmails also has built-in migration tools for common providers (Google Workspace, Zoho, IMAP generic) that preserve folder structure.
4. Update DNS. Change MX records to JustEmails. Update SPF/DKIM/DMARC per the dashboard prompts, editing your existing SPF and DMARC records rather than adding second ones — a domain should have exactly one of each. Changes usually show within minutes and can take a few hours.
5. Test. Send test emails inbound and outbound. Verify mobile clients connect.
6. Done. Keep Rackspace active for a week to catch stragglers, then cancel.
How long a migration takes depends mostly on archive size; most of the time is waiting for IMAP downloads.
Long-term math matters. Here's what you'd pay each provider over 36 months.
15-mailbox setup:
| Provider | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | 3-Year Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rackspace | $1,800 | $1,800 | $1,800 | $5,400 |
| JustEmails | $49 | $49 | $49 | $147 |
| Savings | — | — | — | $5,253 |
30-mailbox setup:
| Provider | Year 1 | Year 2 | Year 3 | 3-Year Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rackspace | $3,600 | $3,600 | $3,600 | $10,800 |
| JustEmails | $49 | $49 | $49 | $147 |
| Savings | — | — | — | $10,653 |
If you need extra storage — say, 100 GB — add $99/year. Team seats beyond the owner? $2/member/month. Even with a storage block and a few team members added, the total stays far below the per-mailbox figures.

Our read of why Rackspace's pricing changed:
Enterprise email hosting looks like a shrinking-margin business. Google and Microsoft dominate the high end. Budget providers like MXroute own the bottom. The middle ground — SMBs paying $3-10/mailbox — is getting squeezed.
Raising prices and accepting that some customers leave is a valid business decision. But it leaves a gap for providers willing to price email like utility infrastructure: flat, predictable, pay-for-storage-not-seats.
JustEmails exists because we think the per-mailbox model is broken. Always has been. Charging more for 30 mailboxes than 5 — when they use identical storage — only makes sense if you're optimizing for revenue extraction, not customer value.
We're obviously biased. And not every migration goes perfectly: DNS changes can take a few hours to show, and older IMAP clients sometimes cache settings in unhelpful ways. None of that changes what the bill looks like a year from now.

Rackspace's pricing page lists its Standard mailbox at $10 per mailbox per month (checked October 2026), up from $2.99 in 2025. That's $120/year per mailbox. Its add-ons doubled too: Email Plus went from +$1 to +$2/mo and Archiving from +$3 to +$6/mo. For a 10-mailbox setup, that's $1,200/year before any add-ons.
Yes. Both services use standard IMAP/POP3, so migration is straightforward. Use any desktop client like Thunderbird or Outlook to download your Rackspace mail, then upload to JustEmails via IMAP. JustEmails also has built-in migration tools for common providers. How long it takes depends mostly on archive size — most of the time is waiting for downloads.
No. JustEmails doesn't offer phone support. Rackspace has long been known for it and still advertises 24x7x365 support. If phone support is critical for your workflow, that's a real trade-off to consider.
Your domain reputation travels with your domain, not your provider. As long as you properly configure SPF, DKIM, and DMARC on JustEmails (the dashboard guides you through this), your deliverability should remain intact. The cutover itself is a DNS change — your sending reputation history stays attached to your domain records.
