AhaSend Alternative: Comparing the JustEmails Transactional API

AhaSend is a genuinely good indie transactional sender. Here's where it beats the JustEmails API, where the bundled mailbox hosting flips the math, and how to pick.

A seed script I wrote on a Saturday didn't check NODE_ENV. Forty-two duplicate welcome emails hit my own inbox in about nine seconds, which was embarrassing but survivable. If you're weighing an AhaSend alternative, those nine seconds aren't the part that should worry you.

What stung was the next twenty minutes. I wanted one thing: the raw MIME of message #17, to confirm the template variable had rendered empty rather than the whole send duplicating upstream. Three dashboard tabs. A retention window that had already rolled. No answer.

That's the thing nobody puts on a pricing page. The API call is the easy part — every provider in this category nails the POST. What separates them is the ten minutes after something breaks, and whether the reply an actual customer sends back to your noreply@ address lands anywhere a human will ever see it.

AhaSend and JustEmails both live in the low-cost end of this market. Both are small. Neither is trying to sell you an "email program strategy." But they're built around different assumptions, and the wrong pick costs you either money or a second vendor.

The 30-second version

AhaSend is a focused, independent transactional sender. API, SMTP, webhooks, logs. One job, no marketing-automation padding you'll never open. If sending is the whole problem, it's a clean answer.

JustEmails is email hosting with a transactional API bolted on top. $49/year flat gets you unlimited domains, unlimited mailboxes, 10 GB of storage, full IMAP/SMTP/POP3, and 1,000 API emails per month. More volume is $25/year per 10,000-emails/month tier, stackable.

Pick AhaSend if you already host your team's email somewhere and just need a sending path. Pick JustEmails if you're about to pay two vendors for one domain.

Why an AhaSend alternative search lands on these two

Both get found by the same search. Somebody outgrows Amazon SES's console, looks at Postmark or Resend, does the math on 20K emails a month, and starts hunting for something smaller.

Real cohort. Indie devs, two-person SaaS teams, agencies shipping client apps. Volume in the thousands, not the millions. Nobody there needs a dedicated IP or a CSM.

Where the two diverge is scope. AhaSend drew a hard line around sending. We drew ours around the domain — everything that touches yourdomain.com, inbox included. Both are defensible. They just produce different bills.

Two rows in that table do most of the work: mailbox hosting and billing shape. Everything else is close enough that it won't decide anything — and honestly, most comparison posts in this category are two thousand words of padding wrapped around exactly those two rows, dressed up as rigour.

Difference 1: one is a sender, the other is a sender with an inbox attached

This is the whole comparison, honestly.

AhaSend sends. Your app POSTs a payload, they hand it to Gmail, they tell you what happened. Password resets, receipts, OTP codes, the digest email nobody reads. No mailboxes to provision, no IMAP, no storage quota, no webmail login to hand a new hire.

JustEmails starts from the other end. The base product is mailbox hosting — unlimited domains, unlimited mailboxes, aliases, catch-alls, a unified inbox across every domain you own. The API is included on top of that, with 1,000 emails/month in the $49/year plan.

So the question isn't "which API is better." It's: do you need somewhere for the replies to go?

Because customers reply. To noreply@. To receipts, asking for a refund. To your onboarding email, with a genuinely good question. If AhaSend is your only email vendor, those replies bounce or vanish — you need a host. Google Workspace, Zoho, Fastmail; pick one, pay them separately.

Already paying that bill and happy with it? Then this section is a non-issue and AhaSend is a fine pick. But if you're at the start of a project choosing both at once, you're comparing one vendor against two — the case for consolidating onto one domain host is here.

Difference 2: the shape of the bill (and why I'm not quoting theirs)

Here's something most comparison posts won't do: I'm not putting AhaSend's prices in this article.

Not because they're bad. Because they're theirs, they change, and a stale number is worse than no number — you'd make a real decision on it. Their pricing page is thirty seconds away.

The shape is what matters anyway, and that's structural:

  • AhaSend bills on usage. You send more, you pay more, roughly linearly. Send nothing in August, pay close to nothing in August. Costs track reality.
  • JustEmails bills annually and flat. $49/year, then $25/year per 10,000-emails/month tier stacked on top — one tier, five tiers, however many the app actually sends. You commit up front and the number doesn't move. Quiet August, loud October, same invoice.

Neither shape wins universally, and anyone saying otherwise is selling something. Usage-based is honest for spiky workloads — if volume triples in December and collapses in January, you shouldn't pay for December all year. Annual flat is easier to budget and usually cheaper per email at steady volume. But you're pre-paying. I've eaten a full year on a side project that died in week six, and no amount of "well, it's annual" made that feel like a clever decision at the time.

Where the flat model stops being a preference and starts being a real gap is multi-domain. Nine product domains under one $49/year account cost the same as one. Fifty client domains at an agency? Same $49/year. Per-seat hosts don't work that way — the company claim is 98.5% savings versus Google Workspace for multi-domain setups, and the arithmetic behind it isn't complicated once you sit down and actually count the seats you're paying for. Running email across a portfolio of products is its own operational problem, and the per-domain tax is a big part of why.

Difference 3: the reply-path problem

You ship. Sending works. Six weeks in, support says "a customer replied to their receipt three times and got nothing back." They did. It went to a noreply@ that isn't a real mailbox on a sending-only provider, and it evaporated.

With AhaSend you fix this by pairing it with a host and pointing Reply-To at a real inbox there. Works fine. It's two vendors, two DNS conversations, two support queues.

With JustEmails the mailbox already exists, because mailboxes are the product. Create support@, set a catch-all, done.

And while we're here — please stop sending from noreply@ at all. Point it at a real role inbox instead; sending from an address nobody reads trains customers to distrust your mail and throws away your highest-intent inbound channel.

Difference 4: DNS, auth, and what breaks at 2am

Both providers will walk you through SPF and DKIM for sending. Table stakes.

The difference shows up in coverage. A sending-only provider configures the records it needs for the mail it sends. Your MX records, your MTA-STS policy, your DMARC alignment across both sending sources — that's you, coordinating two vendors and hoping the SPF include count stays under ten. (RFC 7208's limit is 10 DNS lookups. I blew past it on a client domain once, then spent a day and a half loudly blaming the sending provider before I found the PermError I'd created myself by stacking a third include:. Nobody had counted. I was nobody.)

JustEmails auto-configures the full set — SPF, DKIM, DMARC, MTA-STS — for every domain you add, sending and receiving, because it's the only vendor in the path. Blacklist monitoring on top. Inbound filtering is Rspamd plus ClamAV, which AhaSend doesn't need an opinion about because it doesn't receive mail.

Wire your bounce and complaint webhooks either way — here's how we'd handle those events regardless of provider. Still deciding between API and plain SMTP relay? That tradeoff has its own post.

One honest gap: we don't publish live delivery-speed benchmarks. Some providers in this category do, and if you need to point at a public latency number during a procurement conversation, we can't give you one yet. That's a fair thing to hold against us, and it comes up more than I'd like. Same for uptime dashboards — if you want independent monitoring on your own send endpoint, build a status page off your own uptime data and stop taking any vendor's word for it.

Including ours.

Who should pick what

Go with AhaSend if:

  • Transactional sending is the entire requirement and mailboxes are already handled
  • Your volume is spiky and usage-based billing genuinely tracks your costs better
  • You like small independent tools that refuse to expand their scope (I do too)
  • You'd rather not migrate a working email host to save a few dollars

Go with JustEmails if:

  • You need mailboxes and a sending API and you're sick of two invoices
  • You run more than one domain — this is where flat pricing stops being a rounding error
  • Replies to your app's email need to land somewhere a human reads
  • Annual budgeting is easier for you than watching a usage meter

A coin flip if: one developer, one domain, under 1,000 emails a month, and you already have a mailbox you like. Pick whichever dashboard annoys you less.

The honest verdict

AhaSend is a good product built by people who understand the problem, and the discipline of staying transactional-only is a feature. Most tools in this space add three things a quarter until they collapse under their own weight. AhaSend hasn't. If you're API-only, I don't think you'd regret it.

I work on JustEmails, so weigh this accordingly — but the case for us isn't "better API." It's that the API isn't the expensive part of your email setup. The mailboxes are. Google Workspace at $84+/user/year across a handful of domains dwarfs whatever you're spending on transactional sends, and once you're paying $49/year for that anyway, the sending path is already in the box.

The fuller hosting picture:

ProviderPriceDomainsStorageUnified InboxEmail API
JustEmails$49/yearUnlimited10 GBYes1K/mo free
Google Workspace$84+/user/yrPer-user30 GB/userNoNo
Zoho Mail$12+/user/yrPer subscription5 GB/userNoNo
MXroute$49/yrUnlimited10 GBcPanelNo
Fastmail$60+/user/yrLimited50 GB/userPartialNo
Microsoft 365$72+/user/yrPer-user50 GB/userNoNo

Note the API column. Every one of those hosts sends you back to AhaSend — or SendGrid, or Resend, or SES — for the sending half.

That's the argument. Not that AhaSend does anything wrong. Just that if you're buying both halves anyway, one bill beats two — the same case we've made about collapsing a five-tool observability stack into one. The integration tax is the line item nobody counts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is JustEmails a drop-in AhaSend alternative?

For the sending path, mostly yes — both expose a REST API and an SMTP endpoint, so swapping usually means changing a hostname, a key, and a base URL. Where it isn't drop-in is everything around the send. Your webhook consumer will need remapping to JustEmails' event payloads, and any suppression logic you built against AhaSend's list has to be re-exported and re-imported rather than migrated automatically. Budget an afternoon, not a sprint.

How many transactional emails does JustEmails include?

1,000 API emails per month are bundled into the $49/year plan at no extra cost. Past that, you stack tiers of 10,000 emails/month at $25/year each, as many as you need — one tier, five tiers, however many the app actually sends. There's no per-seat charge on the base plan and no per-domain charge at any volume.

Does AhaSend host mailboxes the way JustEmails does?

No — AhaSend is a transactional sender, not an email host. There's no IMAP, no webmail, no catch-all address a human can actually read. That's a deliberate scope choice on their part and it's part of why the product stays focused. If you need hello@yourdomain.com to be a real inbox, you're pairing AhaSend with Google Workspace, Zoho, Fastmail or similar, and paying two bills.

Should I send transactional email from the same domain as my team mailboxes?

Same root domain, different subdomain. Keep humans on yourdomain.com and push app mail through mail.yourdomain.com or similar, each with its own DKIM selector. That way a bad week for your password-reset reputation doesn't drag your sales inbox down with it. JustEmails auto-configures SPF, DKIM, DMARC and MTA-STS per domain, so the extra subdomain costs you a DNS delegation and nothing else.
